data-mm-id=”_fbhp8uwaq”>The news of Ron Rivera's firing by the Carolina Panthers came as a bit of a shock. The Panthers were indeed spiraling and lost, at home, to the ever-hapless Washington Redskins this past Sunday. But Rivera didn't exactly have the easiest time of it this year after losing his superstar quarterback and face of the franchise, Cam Newton, only two weeks into the season. But with new ownership in town, a change was made. While Rivera didn't really get a fair shake of it in 2019, this is probably for the best after the Panthers failed to build upon their NFC Championship-winning 2015. Argue all you want about the merits of this decision by the franchise, one thing is for certain- Rivera won't be out of a job for long, if he wants to keep coaching. Rivera has won Coach of the Year twice, in 2013 and 2015. He has shown he has the capacity to recognize when he's wrong and change his ways; he was widely criticized for his conservative decision-making in his early years at the head of the Panthers, and turned around that narrative so drastically he was nicknamed Riverboat Ron for all the gambling he'd do on fourth down. He helped customize an offense that played into his star player's strength, and built a strong unit on the defensive side of the ball. Coaching accolades aside, Rivera has also been heralded as one of the best individual people among the coaching ranks in the NFL. As the saying goes, he's a leader of men, and won't be lacking for suitors as a free agent coach. His final press conference should be proof of that, as he thanked everyone in the organization and said his only regret was not winning a Super Bowl. He even took to Twitter to thank the media after the fact. His players thanked him on social too. A HEARTFELT GOODBYE: Former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera held up two t-shirts that said "Missed Opportunities," and "Thank you." at his farewell presser on Wednesday. #KeepPounding #RonRivera #PanthersNation https://t.co/80ZyRZywXe pic.twitter.com/gRbFR5gNZS— FOX 46 Charlotte (@FOX46News) December 4, 2019In my press conference I forgot to thank the #media for the way you treated me & my family these past 9 years. You might have been critical, but always fair & I respect you for doing your job well! #iwillbeback— Ron Rivera (@RiverboatRonHC) December 4, 2019On the day I was traded to the @Panthers in 2011, every player who played for Ron in Chicago said the same thing to me on my way out. “You are going to play for a great coach, but a better man”. I am so proud to have shared this 9 yr journey together with you @RiverboatRonHC— Greg Olsen (@gregolsen88) December 4, 2019This offseason should bring at least a couple of open coaching positions, and potentially more than that. Dan Quinn seems like he's on his way out the door in Atlanta, Doug Marrone has outstayed his welcome in Jacksonville, Pat Shurmur hasn't done much with Daniel Jones and the Giants, and the Lions may decide to move on from the Matt Patricia experiment early. That list doesn't even include Jason Garrett's ever-warm seat in Dallas. Each of these franchises could greatly use a leader and battle-tested coach like Rivera. Rivera has options. He could decide to take a step back from head coaching and take a coordinator position for a season, or step back from all coaching and take a year off. But if he decides he wants to be at the head of another squad, he'll have his pick of the litter.

Paris Saint-Germain welcome Toulouse to the Parc des Princes knowing that they can go top of the Ligue 1 table with a win.
The defending champions have yet to lose so far this season, although they produced a below-par display in a slender 1-0 victory at Valenciennes on Wednesday, Edinson Cavani scoring his third goal for the club since joining from Napoli.
That victory made it 18 games without defeat for PSG in Ligue 1, a run that stretches back to the beginning of March, but they will need to be in good form to maintain that streak against a Toulouse outfit that has experienced a recent upturn in fortunes.

Russian daily newspaper that Zenit winger Vladimir Bystrov will be leaving the club in January.

Bystrov has a contract until the end of the season at Stadion Petrovskij, but the club chiefs will not be offering him a new deal.
Even if boss Luciano Spalletti rates the player highly, everything suggests the experienced midfielder is set to quit Zenit in the January transfer window.
According to Izvestia, Dinamo Moscow and FK Krasnodar are leading the race for Bystrov s signature.

Atletico Madrid have a rich tradition of producing world class strikers. Throughout the last decade, some great strikers have played for the club and the Rojiblancos have always managed to (thanks to their excellent scouting system and transfer strategy) replace one top striker with another.

When Fernando Torres left Atletico to join Liverpool, he was replaced by former Manchester United striker Diego Forlan. And the Uruguayan turned into a huge hit. The likes of Sergio Aguero, David Villa, Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa, Mario Mandzukic and Antoine Griezmann have all graced the green blades of Calderon in the past 10 years.
It is hardly a surprise that Diego Simeone is now looking to sign a top striker this summer. Torres is…
Davide Astori would do anything to seal a move to Milan, according to the player s agent, Renzo Contratto.
The 27-year-old began his career at San Siro but failed to break into the first team, and moved to Cagliari in 2008.
Since then, Astori has become a mainstay of the Cagliari defence, with his performances leading to reports that he is set for a move away from the club.

Luka Modric is desperate to end Real Madrid s LaLiga drought after four years without domestic glory.
The Santiago Bernabeu side last won LaLiga in 2011-12, when they collected 100 points to stay clear of second-placed Barcelona.
They have since failed to win the domestic title, though, with Barcelona winning three titles and Atletico Madrid one over the past four seasons.
I have not won the league yet and hopefully this is the year, Modric told reporters.
You can say that it is our priority because for a club like Real Madrid to go four years without winning it is too long. That does not mean we do not want to win the Champions League, Copa del Rey and everything that we play in.

Jose Mourinho might well have had empathy for his Manchester United successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had Tottenham raided Old Trafford for maximum spoils.
The Portuguese knows more than most about the scrutiny and pressure that comes with the United manager s job, himself seen off by an awful stretch this time last year that provided neither style nor substance.
For Solskjaer, Mourinho s return will be followed by a trip to Manchester City, and the twin fixtures looked a daunting dual threat to a team and manager who before the Tottenham game were winless in three across all competitions.
At kick-off, Solskjaer was second favourite with the bookmakers to be the next Premier League manager sacked, trailing only Marco Silva, the struggling Everton boss who could n…
